ELMER ISELER SINGERS CONDUCTOR CELEBRATES HONOUR IN HOMETOWN

CONTRIBUTED • MAURA McGROARTY

A celebration for 2023 Order of Canada recipient Lydia Adams, conductor and artistic director for the Canadian choir ensemble Elmer Iseler Singers, was held Monday at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on Brookside Street. Adams was born and raised in Glace Bay, and had since the 1980s relocated to Ontario. Attendees for Monday’s event included previous Order of Canada winners Allister MacGillivray, singer-songwriter (notable for “Song for the Mira”), musician and music historian, and Dr. Marie Battiste, Cape Breton University’s special adviser to the vice-president, academic, and to Unama’ki College on decolonizing the academy; as well as Noelle Wadden, conductor of the Cape Breton Orchestra, and a reunion of the Glace Bay Teenaires, in which Adams sang during her teenage years. Shown in this photo are, from left, Dr. Marie Battiste, Lydia Adams and Allister MacGillivray.
