Man sentenced for 2020 home invasion

A Scotch Village man sentenced on more than three dozen charges has netted federal time for a 2020 home invasion in Kentville.

In March, Adam David Chambers, 34, pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a home invasion that occurred in Kentville on Aug. 30, 2020.

They included using a weapon or an imitation thereof in committing an assault; breaking and entering an individual’s residence and committing the indictable offence of assault; and robbing an individual of a sum of money.

Chambers also pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing two peace officers engaged in the execution of their duty in Kentville on Sept. 1, 2020.

Five other charges were dismissed as Chambers’ trial got underway on Sept. 4, 2021. The trial on the four remaining charges continued on Sept. 20, 2021, and a decision was handed down on Sept. 28, 2021.

Chambers was found guilty on all four counts. The matters were adjourned to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.

On Dec. 29, 2021, Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek sentenced Chambers to seven years in federal custody on the assault with a weapon charge. The court granted a primary DNA order and imposed a 10-year firearm prohibition against Chambers.

Chambers was sentenced to one year in custody, to be served concurrently on the charge of breaking and entering an individual’s residence and committing the indictable offence of assault.

He was sentenced to three years of concurrent time for robbing an individual and 60 days of concurrent time on the obstruction charge.

Chambers was sentenced on 35 other, unrelated charges on Dec. 29. He was sentenced to eight months in custody, to be served consecutively, for break, enter and theft from the Atlantic Superstore on Joseph Howe Drive in Halifax on Dec. 24, 2019.

Chambers was sentenced to 60 days, to be served consecutively, for committing the included offence of unlawfully being inside a dwelling. He had originally been charged with breaking and entering an apartment and committing an indictable offence therein. Chambers committed this offence in Halifax on June 2, 2020.

Chambers was sentenced to concurrent jail time on the 33 remaining charges. Another 62 charges against Chambers were withdrawn or dismissed on Dec. 29.

Chambers was given credit for time spent remanded in custody, for a net sentence of six years and four days going forward on the 39 charges.
