It’s amazing the avenues of adventure that await us in Nova Scotia.

In a province filled with endless trails and natural beauty, the most spectacular gems can often go unnoticed. Luckily, for Nova Scotians wanting to explore their own backyard, guided hikes and walks are being offered in all areas of the province this fall by Hike Nova Scotia — providing an opportunity to enjoy the season’s stunning colours, discover new paths and connect with community.

“Fall is a perfect time to experience nature in our beautiful province,” says Hike Nova Scotia executive director Janet Barlow. “Whether you are a seasoned hiker or someone who enjoys less strenuous outings, our guided hike and walk series has you covered.”

Hike NS and 18 host organizations have partnered to offer the Fall Guided Hike and Walk Series from Sept. 17 to Nov. 20. There are 39 walks scheduled province-wide. Local folks lead the walks, and participants qualify to win trail prizes.

Of course, meeting fellow hiking enthusiasts, getting some exercise and taking in the great outdoors is prize enough.

“The social aspect has always been an important part of our Guided Hike and Walk Series,” says Barlow.

“People have been coming back together a bit more now that the pandemic seems to be turning down a little bit, but they’re still pretty starved to get out and be with others,” adds Barlow. “The beauty of these guided hikes and walks is you’re in an outdoor setting and able to get more space — it’s not as risky a situation as being in a crowded indoor venue — so it’s a more Covid-friendly place to come, socialize and enjoy nature.”

And the price is certainly right as most walks (requiring pre-registration) are free or low-cost.

Excited to get out on the trails in her own community, Barlow would definitely agree the experience is priceless.

“I personally get so much out of it — the mental health aspect, moving my body and being with others outside just enjoying the day,” says Barlow. “It’s always fun to know that we’ve got people chomping at the bit to get out on these events because we always have a really good turnout.”

Hike NS thanks its local partners for organizing walks in their respective communities, as well as The Trail Shop, Goose Lane Editions and the NS Department of Communities,

Culture and Heritage for their support.

Meanwhile, Hike NS welcomes all interested in exploring their local trails this fall to visit the organization’s website for full hike/walk schedules, lengths, difficulty levels, registration details and directions. Hikes are listed by month and region for Annapolis Valley, Halifax, Highland, Fundy and South Shore.

“We hope people can come out and enjoy the fall colours,” says Barlow.
