Wolfville moves forward with feasibility study for community safety office

ATLANTIC BRIEFS DESK sw-briefs@saltwire.com

To help address community concerns and improve safety, Wolfville is launching a community safety office feasibility study.

The study will be led by Stephen Schneider, and a plan will be made to establish a community safety office in the town when the study finishes in the fall.

After months of engagement and consultation with stakeholders, nuisance parties and road safety were the biggest issues.

Additionally, the community highlighted the need for improved efforts in combating small-scale crime and property damage.

Mayor Wendy Donovan expressed her enthusiasm about the potential of this development.

“I look forward to sharing the results of Dr. Schneider's review and gaining a deeper understanding of what a pilot project will entail for our town,” said Donovan in a press release.

The planning phase, authorized by Wolfville council on May 16, will finish with a submission of a comprehensive report to the town.

The report outlines the mandate, goals, principles, strategies, programs and services of the proposed community safety office.

It also presents an initial estimate of the required resources, a preliminary description of the staffing position and a framework for monitoring and evaluating the pilot project.

Acadia University has also committed to covering 50 per cent of the project's costs.
