Wolfville’s Stage Prophets announce largest show ever

Local group promises a rock opera style production with Jesus Christ Superstar

Stage Prophets, in collaboration with Destination Acadia, is celebrating the return of live theatre with its largest show ever — a massive, stadium-sized production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's much beloved rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

Originally released in 1972 as a Grammy award winning and Platinum selling concept album, Jesus Christ Superstar, and its songs — such as Superstar, I Don't Know How to Love Him, Everything's Alright — had a transformational

impact on music, live theatre, and the movies.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera based on the last week of Jesus' life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles rock opera style production (complete with pyrotechnics) at Acadia's 1,500-seat Andrew H. McCain Arena.

“Following delays due to the pandemic, I am so excited to embark on this next chapter of our Stage Prophets journey in celebration of 20 years as an operating theatre with our most ambitious production to date: an epic stadium styled production featuring a mass choir, rock and roll band, pyrotechnics and many more surprises,” said Mary Hanneman, the artistic director in a press release.

“There is so much talent in our community and you will be amazed at the quality of production. From a theatre group that began 20 years ago in the basement of a local church with 16 youth wearing tie-dyed shirts and singing their hearts out to Godspell, to rocking the 1,500-seat Andrew H. McCain Arena, we are so excited to show you what we are capable of,” she said.
