Avon View stretches win streak to 13 games

The Avon View Avalanche won the Birthplace of Hockey High School Tournament recently in Windsor. The host Avalanche defeated the Millwood Knights from Middle Sackville 2-1 in the championship game of the eight-team tournament Nov. 14 at the West Hants Recreation Centre. The victory marked Avon View’s 13th consecutive win in league, tournament and exhibition play. Gavin Sheehy, who scored both goals for the home side in the final, was named the tournament MVP. He had eight goals in five games, including a hat trick in an 8-1 victory over Horton in the semifinal. Avon View finished first in the Chook Smith Division with two regulation wins and an overtime victory. Avon View began the tournament by defeating the Hants East Tigers 3-1 before beating the North Nova Gryphons 4-3 in a shootout and the J.L. Ilsley Judges 7-2. Hugo Sorbetti of Horton scored with 24 seconds left in their final round-robin game with the Strait Area Education Recreation Centre (SAERC) from Port Hawkesbury as the Griffins won 3-2. It created a three-way tie with Millwood and Northumberland at 2-1-0. Northumberland was eliminated based on goals for/goals against in games played between the three teams. Horton defeated Millwood and SAERC 3-2 and lost 3-2 to Northumberland in roundrobin play. Avon View last won the tournament in 2018. The 2020 competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
