Still time to get involved in Art Acquisition Show

RICHARD MACKENZIE TRURO NEWS richard.mackenzie@saltwire.com

TRURO - There is still time for local artists to get involved with this year’s holding of the Town of Truro’s Art Acquisition Program.

Started in 2016 as an “effort to create and maintain a collection of visual art which reflects the unique historic and artistic development of Truro,” COVID interrupted the program for a couple of years before it made a grand return last spring.

“We were thrilled with the quality and caliber,” town councillor Cathy Hinton said of the artwork submitted last year. The winning entries ended up bein g Sheila Newell for her Victoria St. Beauties painting in the painting and photography category, and Checking It

Out, a wood carving by Keith Cheyne.

This year the categories are ‘paintings’ and ‘all other mediums,’ and more information and application forms can be found at www.truro.ca/programsand-events.html#artacquisition.

Hinton said application forms can also be picked up at the recreation office on Douglas Street or by contacting her directly.

“We’re hoping to reach those new to the area,” Hinton said as a goal for this year’s program. “We’re always looking for the new artists who have recently relocated to the area along with the amazing artists who are already here.”

Hinton said while the posted deadline for submission is March 24, there is a little bit of time beyond then for a few late entrees, so artists should inquire.

The Town of Truro Art Acquisition Show goes from April 3 to 28 at the Mccarthy Hall Gallery on the campus of the Truro Nova Scotia Community College. The opening event, where the top entrees are selected for each category, and added to the town’s permanent collection, takes place on April 13 at the gallery starting at 5 p.m.
