TRURO, N.S. — The United Way of Colchester County's Elves for Elders program is returning for its eighth year to help seniors who may feel isolated during the holidays.

This year, the annual giftgiving project begins on Nov. 21.

Through the program, senior care facilities and other agencies throughout Colchester County identify seniors who are isolated during the holidays. Then, gift tags are put on trees throughout the community for people to choose from and buy gifts for the seniors.

Classic Rentals has been part of the program since 2019 and has a giving tree for customers and community members to select a tag to support a senior in need over the holidays.

Nancy Crosby is the coowner of Classic Rentals. She commented on their involvment in the Elves for Elders program.

“We decided to take a more active role in supporting Elves for Elders because it is a way to let seniors in our community know that we see them and that we care,” said Crosby. “A simple gift and even a card can touch someone who has no family or is lonely – someone who has worked, raised a family and even volunteered in ourcommunity, helping shape it to what it is today."

Alderberry Village, Clay Café Truro, Classic Rentals, Elegant Steps, Keith’s Gas Bar, Red Knot Bakery, Truro Farmer’s Market and the United Way of Colchester County office are all putting up a giving tree for the program. Elegant Steps' owner and campaign co-chair of the United Way of Colchester Community Campaign Karen Baillie explained why her business became involved with the program.

"We always have community at the centre of our business, particularly over the holidays," said Baillie. "Seniors are such a large part of what makes our community vibrant, so it was a perfect fit for us to get involved with Elves for Elders this year."

New to the program this year, United Way of Colchester County is teaming up with Truro Buzz to include greeting cards with the gifts as part of the Truro Buzz Holiday Senior Drive.

With the support of partners and community members, the program is expected to deliver 200 gifts to seniors throughout the county in December.

Those looking to give gifts will need to deliver the items to Elegant Steps by Dec. 9.
