TRURO - The CEC Cougars played three of their best games of the season to advance to the School Sport Nova Scotia (SSNS) final but did not have enough left in the tank to take down the Lockview Dragons.

“We were, kind of, walking the tight rope with our pitching staff,” said head coach Scott Macgillivray after the final played on Stadium #1 ballfield in Truro.

“But, it’s the old cliché, if you had told us at the first of the year we would go to the finals with a chance to win it all, we would have taken it.”

Lockview hammered the Cougars in the title game by the score of 13-2. It was a mercy-rule shortened game played about 45 minutes after CEC did a little thumping of their own with an 8-1 win over Memorial High School in the semi-final.

The Cougars advanced to the semi-final as the top seed from Pool A after a narrow defeat to Lockview (3-2) and a shutout win over Glace Bay High School 4-0.

Pool A was played in Truro while Pool B was held in Dartmouth where Citadel and Memorial emerged as the first and second seeds.

“We came up short today, but the score isn’t indicative of our team, I thought we had a great year overall,” Macgillivray said of his team which put together a 12-5-1 record on their way to becoming Northumberland Region champions.

He added that in the final, they did have a few opportunities to keep it close but couldn’t get the timely hits to push a few runs across the board and keep a rally going.

“We just didn’t have the key hits in those opportunities,” he said. “It’s a tough way to lose and right now they (the players) may not see it but I’m sure they’ll look back later and really appreciate the successes and memories they created with their teammates.”

Macgillivray said while the team loses five key players to graduation, they have a talented core coming back and solid prospects to add.

“So we are really looking forward to next season,” he said.
