Truro should look for solutions beyond killing for deer population issue

I was disappointed recently to hear that Truro is planning to kill deer.

Normally an ecosystem is able to balance out naturally and this action is a result of what is perceived as overpopulation of deer in the area.

Actually, the issue for some is the invasion of their land and gardens by deer. If the food was not there, deer would not come out of the woods.

Humans have cleared what was deer territory. I am sure that consulting with Indigenous people in the area would result in a more humane way to address the issue. Simply killing animals is not the solution. It impacts the natural balance of the ecosystem.

Other possible solutions include fencing, not feeding the deer, or using the deer for food for those needing food for the winter.

Many animals, including bears and others that were simply partaking of human leftovers, have been killed unnecessarily in recent years. It is we humans who need to change our approach, not solve our problems by eradicating nature.

I strongly suggest that Truro look to its Millbrook neighbours for advice.

To kill and waste the deer is inhumane and speaks to our selfishness as humans.

Sincerely

Carla Digiorgio Wolfville, N.S.
