REFUSAL OF GOLF STREET DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL SOUND PLANNING, NOT ‘DOLTISH DECISION’

I’m writing in response to John Mcelhiney’s letter “Golf Street development refusal ‘doltish decision’’’ written in the Opinion Section of the Thursday, July 1 edition of the Truro Daily News. This in turn was written in response to the article ‘Council votes down eight-story development’ published in the Thursday, June 17 edition of this newspaper.

Daniel Patrick Moynihan,

United States Senator, famously wrote “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.”

Whilst Mayor Bill Mills and Mr. Mcelhiney are entitled to their own opinions regarding this development, the fact is that this development poposal violated multiple planning policies as laid out in the Town’s Municipal Planning Strategy. For this reason, this development proposal was rejected by the Town’s Planning Advisory Committee. Similarly, Truro Town Councillors also turned down the proposal 5-2.

Listening to the Truro Town Council meeting, it became abundantly clear that the vast majority of councillors had been extremely diligent in familiarizing themselves at great length with the Municipal Planning Strategy prior to voting. Everyone who voted against the development proposal articulated how this application contravened the planning policies and for this reason the development proposal was rejected.
