Wedgeport Legion to recognize veterans

CONTRIBUTED TRI-COUNTY VANGUARD

For the eighth continuous year the Wedgeport Legion Branch 155 will remember and commemorate the D-Day successful invasion of Normandy, France, of June 6, 1944, and the German defeats in Italy, Holland, and Germany.

For the first time this year, during a civilian ceremony in the Wedgeport Church, the Legion will recognize and honour its 68 members who have served or are serving Canada in the military including the three remaining living veterans of the Second World War: Charles A. Muise (age 101), Owen D. Atkinson (age 100) and Lorraine M. Cottreau (age 97).

The event will be held on Saturday morning, June 3, at 10:30 a.m.

‘‘It is because of all veterans and men/women serving today that we have the privilege of living in a peaceful democratic country. So, we ask the public to join us on June 3 to help us honour them,’’ says Legion president Curtis Doucet.

The event was made possible thanks to a grant from Veterans Affairs Canada under its Commemorative

Partnership Program. The Municipality of Argyle also made a financial contribution towards the event.

The circumstantial speech at the ceremony will be given by West Nova MP Chris d’Entremont, the Deputy Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons. At the Legion Hall reception, Argyle MLA and provincial minister Colton LeBlanc; Argyle councillor Gordon Boudreau; and Legion member Don McCumber, representing NS/ Nunavut Legion Command, will speak.

A booklet of the brief military biographies of the Legion’s members that served and are serving in the military will be available. A printed photo album of the event will be produced later in the summer and made available to be purchased.
