Electric power tool caused fatal house fire, say RCMP

Fire investigators have determined an electric power tool caused a fatal house fire in Upper Wedgeport, Yarmouth County.

The RCMP say a 73-year-old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Emergency crews responded to a home on Boudreau Road in Upper Wedgeport just after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

While driving to the scene, RCMP officers learned that a woman had been removed from the home, but she was unconscious, states an RCMP media release. The woman had been located inside the home by the first people on scene.

The woman was still unconscious when officers arrived. Paramedics with EHS took over her care. However, police said the woman could not be resuscitated and was pronounced deceased

Numerous fire departments responded to the fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.

Investigators have determined the fire was caused by an electric power tool that spontaneously caught fire. The RCMP did not identity the type of power tool.

The police said the fire is not suspicious, and their investigation has concluded.
