Humbs up humbs down

TPumpkinville Kudos to everyone in East Pubnico, Yarmouth County, who are taking us on a trip through Pumpkinville.

Local residents have really tapped into their creativity in producing fun and colourful pumpkin people displays on their lawns and in their yards for the enjoyment of others.

Their efforts are appreciated by all who take the drive out to take a look.

Great job folks.

Veterans banners

The new banners honouring veterans that have gone up in the Town of Yarmouth are simply beautiful.

What a great thing that these banners will be on display for a month.

From what we’ve seen on social media when families make posts about the banners, they are so pleased with this new memorial banner program that was brought forward by the town and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61. People speak of being swept up with emotion when seeing their loved one’s banner for the first time.

Veterans are always deserving of being honoured and thanked.

This is a really nice way to do so.

If you can, why not take a walk and take the time to read the names and see the faces of all of the veterans on the banners.

We guarantee, you’ll be swept up with emotion too.

July election date We think it’s good that the Tim Houston government has announced a fixed election date for provincial elections in this province. Especially given that fact that Nova Scotia was the only province not to have them.

But we don’t think the July 15 date that’s been selected is the best idea.

We just had a summer election this year and let’s be honest, it’s not the best time of the year to engage voters. People are in more of a vacation, summer cottage, beach, camping and being outdoors frame of mind.

And with that you run the risk of lower voter turnout. The goal should really always be to avoid that.

In addition to this, it’s been pointed out that you also lose out on engaging students – a.k.a. future voters – in the process, as elections are often used as a teaching tools in classrooms.

A spring or fall election date, we feel, would be the better choice.
