Equipment swap planned

Do you have ice sports equipment that no longer fits or not needed? An equipment swap is coming up.

To celebrate Waste Reduction Week, Waste Check is holding some local ice sports equipment swaps. People can bring equipment to swap, donate equipment not being used and/or come see if there is anything they need to be able to participate in an ice sport.

In partnership with the Digby Minor Hockey Association, a swap was held at the Digby Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 19.

In partnership with the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, another swap will be held Friday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Items to consider for swapping or donating include skates (ex. hockey or figure skates) kids or adults; skating aids or any hockey equipment.

Proof of vaccination will be required to enter the Mariners Centre and people will be asked to follow public health protocols.

Active trails update

Crews have made quick progress on Phases 2 and 3 of the Town of Yarmouth’s newest active trails project.

The first piece of Phase 2 has involved adding an extension to the existing sidewalk on the north side of Starrs Road with the existing sidewalk in front of Home Hardware to the intersection at Haley Road. New catch basins and storm sewer piping were added and the project will now see sub-grading to the sidewalk level and formwork for concrete and curbing.

Phase 3 work that involves extending the trail westward on Forest Street in front of the Yarmouth high school began on Oct. 11. The addition of the subgrade has been completed for the entire length, as well as curbing and ditching. This week will see the trail fine graded and paved.

Work also began on the larger piece of Phase 2 on Oct. 18. This involves adding trail between Parade Street and Starrs Road on Haley Road. Traffic control is in place.

Puppy splash fundraiser held

A puppy splash was held at the Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa on Oct. 11.

People were invited to bring their dogs out for a swim as the pool was closing for the season.

Through the event $305 was raised for the Digby Splash Park, a project that is being fundraised for.

Plans are to hold the event again next year.
