Fire destroys another abandoned building

CARLA ALLEN TRICOUNTY VANGUARD

A pile of rubble was all that remained of an abandoned structure on the corner of William and Argyle streets in Yarmouth on the morning of Tuesday, April 27.

Firefighters from the Yarmouth and Port Maitland departments responded to a fire call at around 3:30 a.m.

Yarmouth fire chief Mike Deveau says career firefighters were on scene very quickly. There was heavy fire and smoke.

“Volunteers arrived and supplemented in another engine and support vehicle,” he said. “Firefighters contained the fire from spreading and were on site until around 9 a.m.”

This was the second time in a month firefighters were called to the property. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This became at least the fifth suspicious fire in an abandoned building that is under investigation in Yarmouth County.

On Facebook the morning of April 27 Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood posted this message: “If you see anyone around any abandoned buildings please call the RCMP immediately, 902-742-8777. I know some of you have already done that and we thank you. Peoples lives are at risk here.”
