Millions available for post-secondary internship opportunities

The Nova Scotia government is partnering with Mitacs, a national notfor-profit research organization, to create more paid internships for postsecondary students in the province.

The government will provide $13 million to create up to 3,200 paid internship opportunities for post-secondary students and other learners in the province over the next four years.

The internships will focus on health care, clean tech and other sectors that require highly qualified researchers.

Mitacs works with universities and colleges across the country to match post-secondary talent to businesses and other organizations.

“Mitacs internships have been a catalyst for stimulating economic development in our province and we are excited to see the impact of this significant added investment,” Brian Wong, minister of advanced education, said in a news release.

“This program has increased productivity while creating new jobs and opportunities. Added research funding strengthens our commitment to invest in post-secondary students to make Nova Scotia an affordable and desirable place to build a life and career.”

The province said the funding will be used to leverage further contributions from the federal government and participating organizations.

Participants, including college and university students, post-doctoral researchers and recent graduates, will contribute their specialized skills and expertise to help local companies find new solutions to challenges facing the province.

The provincial government provides $1 million a year to fund up to 250 internships and the federal government offers $1.5 million annually. The new funding brings the number of internship opportunities to a total of up to 4,200 over four years.

The province said the internships will also support Nova Scotia’s efforts to develop its skilled workforce as well as attract and retain highly qualified post-secondary talent.
