Kingston STEERFEST returns this summer

Finally, after two years of cancelled celebrations and festivities, Kingston Village has plans to resume a timehonoured tradition by feting the village mascot, Kingsley the Steer.

Kingsley has come out of the barn where he winters and has been mounted on his perch on Main Street in front of the Kingston Superstore. He looks very sleek, with a re-do last spring, and is up for a party.

On July 9 get ready for STEERFEST, a reworked and revised steer barbecue, honouring Kingsley, lessened COVID concerns and what is good in our world.

Even before July 9, there will be a colouring contest run by Canada Post Kingston to entice children to apply their artistic skills and get their creative juices flowing. On July 8, the Kingston library will host an open house to showcase its newly-expanded facility, which was completed during the pandemic when people were discouraged from gathering. Inquire at the library for a full slate of the activities they are planning for that day.

On the morning of July 9, plans are being made for a breakfast at the fire hall to the start the day. There will be a parade down Main Street just before noon. Villages, towns or businesses who have a float they would like to enter in the parade can check out Kingston STEERFEST on Facebook to learn how to get an application. The parade ends at the Credit Union Centre on Westwood Street, where, for the rest of the day, there will be food and entertainment and activities for people of all ages. The evening rounds out the day with a dance at the Kingston Legion.

Probably the most important thing to most Kingston residents steeped in the tradition of feting the steer is the Lions will be cooking up burger bits, which are not hamburger meat. They are succulent morsels of beef, roasted to perfection, chopped into bite-size pieces and served over a bun, kissed with a splash of delightful gravy. There will be other food offerings as well, but the burger bits are what define the festival.

One aspect of STEERFEST will be a market inside the Credit Union Centre (CCU). Between the breakfast and the parade, people might want to park their car nearby and go into the CCU (arena) to admire all the wares and shop before the crowds build. Vendors of all kinds have an opportunity to display their wares for sale. You yourself may have learned a new skill whilst COVID raged, and perhaps all those dishcloths you knitted or soap you made need to be distributed somehow. Think about arranging a stall at the market. Phone Muriel at 902-765-8554 to discuss how ro become a vendor.

Check Kingston STEERFEST Facebook page frequently as plans for the event evolve.
