Dry end to May with little rain in sight

While we’ve been looking for warmer weather, rain is desperately needed as wildfires burn in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Unfortunately, the weather conditions won’t be favourable for crews battling these fires, with little rain, warming temperatures and gusty winds in the forecast.

The main weather feature for the next several days will be a ridge of high pressure. This will allow for fair weather across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island through Thursday, with fair conditions for Newfoundland, except for a chance of showers over central and western Newfoundland into Labrador.

Temperatures were knocked down on Monday behind a cold front but will rebound through the week. By Wednesday and Thursday, high temperatures will range from mid-20s to low 30s away from onshore winds in all four Atlantic provinces, with temperatures in the teens along the coast.

Developing south and southwest winds will also allow daytime gusts between 20 and 40-plus km/h for the next few days.

There will be changes to the weather pattern at the end

of the week as a trough of low pressure and associated cold front will sweep scattered showers across the region Thursday night through Friday.

These showers could produce five to 15-plus mm, but it’s not looking widespread at this point.

There’s also uncertainty in the weekend forecast, with some models indicating a chance of showers will hold while others move high-pressure back in with clear skies.

This is certainly not the situation we want to be in as we close out May and head into June, and we can only hope for a pattern change to help bring relief to our region.
