Calming but still unsettled weather to close out January

It certainly was a wild weather week – especially the winds that howled Thursday and into Friday across the region. The overall weather pattern has settled, and there’s no major storms on my radar, but that doesn’t mean we’re completely rid of the unsettled weather.

A ridge of high-pressure is trying to keep our weather calm, but a weak trough will move into Labrador and will bring some isolated showers or wet flurries into the Maritime provinces today and tonight, then for Newfoundland Sunday.

There’s also a weak lowpressure system that will cross the region Sunday night into Monday. The system is set to bring rain showers, possibly mixing with some wet snow to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and southern New Brunswick Sunday night into Monday, with snow for the rest of New Brunswick.

Much of Newfoundland should also expect some snow overnight Sunday into Monday morning, but it will mix to rain showers for southeastern regions.

The result will be about five to 10 cm for much of New Brunswick, along with central and western Newfoundland, with pockets of 15 cm. Western P.E.I. and parts of eastern Newfoundland could accumulate up to five centimetres. Otherwise, for those provinces and Nova Scotia, little-to-no snow is forecast, with two to 10 mm of rain from the system.

At this point, no major storms are set to roll through as we close our January and welcome February. However, another weak trough is forecast for Tuesday into Tuesday night, with onshore flurries late next week.

I’m also watching a stretch of below-normal temperatures that will settle in during the second half of next week into next weekend, which looks likely to be some of the coldest air of the season thus far.
