Outer Battery floodlights turned off

Bright floodlights that shined into Outer Battery residents’ homes 24-7 since May last year are now turned off.

The small, historic neighbourhood situated on the edge of a cliff at the mouth of St. John’s harbour has made national news in recent weeks as concerns about the lights came to a boiling point when St. John’s city council refused to create a nuisance-lighting bylaw.

The man at the centre of the issue is Colin Way, a Corner Brook businessman who owns a property in the Outer Battery.

His lawyer, Bob Buckingham, told Saltwire Network on Friday, Jan. 27, there will likely be comment next week on the fact that the lights are now turned off.

Buckingham said Way is facing criminal charges respecting several issues in the neighbourhood, so he will not be making any comment.

One of the many other issues residents expressed concerns about is a van alleged to be owned byway that has been used as another bullying tactic, according to residents.

In one instance, a resident said the van was parked so close to her car that she couldn't move it for 10 days. In another instance, residents said the van was parked in a turnaround for 18 days and the city didn't tow it.

On Friday, Jan. 27, ServiceMaster Restore of Canada's spokesperson provided a statement to Saltwire Network.

"It has been brought to our attention that a franchise owner of Servicemaster Restore in western Newfoundland has an abandoned vehicle parked on public property. Each franchise is independently owned and operated, and as the franchisor, the company is taking the appropriate remedial measures," the company said.

The company posted the same statement on its Face - book page on Thursday. Saltwire asked for an in

terview, but the spokesperson said there was no one available.

Saltw ire also asked Buckingham about the van. "Ther e is no comment on the parked vehicle," he said in an email.
