RCMP warns of fake social media posts falsely reporting dangerous offenders, missing people

Newfoundland and Labrador RCMP is warning the public of several fake posts circulating on social media.

Police said, recently, posts containing images and reports of dangerous offenders, as well as missing individuals, have been circulating on various classified advertisement social media pages.

The false reports are causing safety concerns for residents who fear that there are dangerous offenders in their community, police said in a news release.

RCMP said that any public safety concerns or missing persons reports would be communicated through the force’s social media platforms and through major news outlets.

Police encouraged the public to report fake posts through the particular social media page where they are posted.
