MANION, Nina Adele (née Nord)

November 25, 1928-December 20, 2021 Family and friends are saddened by the passing of Nina Adele Manion on Monday, December 20, 2021 at the Waterford Retirement Residence, Kingston, Ont. She is survived by her late husband’s nieces, Sharon Buffett, Susan Bain (Richard) and Patricia Yott and their families, and family and friends in Germany, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Alberta and British Columbia. She was predeceased by her husband Eugene (Gene) Manion, her parents John and Josephine (née Reddig) Nord, and her younger brother Konstantin. Nina was born in Kronsdorf, Ukraine and, as a teenager, fled Ukraine after World War II with her mother and younger brother (who did not survive the journey), to safety with family and friends in Germany. In 1945, Nina and her mother moved to BC to be with family. In the early 1960's, Nina’s work took her to NL, where she set up the accounting systems for chainsaw dealerships. In Corner Brook, NL, she met Gene Manion, a young bush pilot from Wolfe Island, Ontario, who was just starting his flying business. They married in May 1966, worked together, and Nina’s mother joined them in NL. After retiring from their successful flying business in 2002, Gene and Nina moved to Ontario and lived for many years on Howe Island. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 10:30 am at the Roman Catholic Cemetery on Wolfe Island, with Fr. James Quirk presiding. A reception will follow at Hotel Wolfe Island. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Red Cross in support of Ukraine would be appreciated.
