$1.8M raised for slain Texas teacher whose husband died of ‘broken heart’

A staggering $1.8 million has been raised for the children of the murdered Texas teacher whose husband died of a broken heart just two days later.

The Gofundme was launched to raise money for the four children of Irma Garcia, who was killed along with another teacher and 19 young students on Tuesday in tiny Uvalde.

Within two days of her murder, her husband Joe Garcia died of a heart attack. The couple had been married 24 years.

“I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life of more than 25 years was too much to bear,” said Irma’s cousin Debra Austin, who started the fundraiser Thursday.

“(Irma) loved her classroom kids and died trying to protect them.”

The fundraiser modestly set a goal of just $10,000 but donations from almost 30,000 people around the planet set the meter soaring as of Friday morning.

According to media reports, $1,819,500 had been raised for the family whose children ranged in age from 12 to 23.

In addition, the primary “Texas Elementary School Shooting Victims Fund ” raised $3,654,960 by Friday with donations from more than 54,000 people. The main fund was established by activist group Victimsfirst, to ensure “that 100 per cent of what is collected goes DIRECTLY to the victim base so the victims’ families and those wounded/ injured.”

The group added: “We vowed this would never happen again,” noting that “funds collected will go to the families in cash payments with no strings attached are protected from fraud and exploitation.”
