The Historic Sites Association (HSA) of Newfoundland and Labrador has announced the nominees for the 2022 Edward Roberts History Book Award short list.

In a news release, HSA said the final three shortlisted books all demonstrate excellence in historical research, writing and presentation that enriches the public’s appreciation of the history and heritage of the province.

The list starts with “On Record: Audio Recording, Mediation and Citizenship in Newfoundland and Labrador” by Beverly Diamond, which was published by Mcgillqueens University Press in 2021.

The book profiles the diversity of music recording in the province, from Indigenous

to settler communities and features traditional and classical music from individuals, ensembles, bands, choirs and orchestras.

“A Long Journey: Residential Schools in Newfoundland and Labrador”, by Andrea Procter which was published by Iser Books in 2020, was also nominated.

Procter presents detailed histories of the schools run by the Moravian Mission and the International Grenfell

Association in coastal and central Labrador and St. Anthony.

She also tells the stories of former students and the communities they came from with files from the school’s archives and the government’s.

The third book, written by C.A. Sharpe and A.J. Shawyer, is entitled “Corner Windows and Cul de Sacs: The Remarkable Story of Newfoundland’s First Garden Suburb”, published by

Memorial University Press in 2021.

Sharpe and Shawyer’s story is of human interest and shares the rationale, vision, personalities and policies behind the development of the Churchill Park suburb of St. John’s.

The winning publication will receive a $500 prize, which will be announced at the HSA Manning Award Ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s on June 9.
