ST. JOHN’S — Sport Newfoundland and Labrador handed out 16 scholarships to athletes at its 31st Annual Scholarship Reception in St. John’s on May 26.

Announced in a release, Sport N.L. said this year’s Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship recipient is Katarina Roxon, who received the $1,500 scholarship for her 2021 athletic achievements.

Roxon, an elite swimmer, submitted an application that stood out with impressive national and international athletic achievements.

The Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year in honour of a St. John’s native, and Sport N.L. Hall of Fame Inductee, who was an enthusiastic volunteer on several Sport N.L. committees.

“I am so thankful that I am able to present this scholarship each year in my late husband Frank’s memory to such deserving athletes because the funds help them excel in their sports,” said Marie Butler.

Sport N.L. also award 15 other athletes including Breanna Andres, Shae-lynn Clarke, Noah Cumby, Michael Drover, Ethan Efford, Carmen Elliot, Liam Hickey, Abby Newhook, Sophie Pickard, Jordan Pomeroy, Jasmine Rahman, Alyson Thomas, Cole Tucker, Mitchel Whelan and Nathan Young.

Each year, since 1991, Sport N.L. has awarded scholarships to deserving athletic students across the province to help offset the high cost associated with training and competition while completing a post-secondary degree.

“We received an exemplary number of applications this year from a very deep and impressive pool of post-secondary student-athletes,” said Sport NL executive director Troy Croft. “The purpose of the scholarships is to provide the athletes of our province with financial support to achieve their goals.”
