Rain to start the weekend but sunshine to finish

The last weekend of May is already here, and we have wet weather in the forecast, including some lateseason snow for Labrador.

But there will also be some sunshine to enjoy.

The rain showers that arrived in parts of the region on Friday will become more widespread throughout Saturday. Rain will develop across Newfoundland as a warm front moves northward and low-pressure approaches. From that low, the trailing cold front will cross the Maritimes later Saturday into early Sunday, with scattered showers becoming more widespread with a risk of downpours and thundershowers.

Rainfall amounts are quite variable given the nature of the system and the risk of localized downpours and storms. The highest amounts will be across Newfoundland and northern New Brunswick, with lesser amounts elsewhere.

Wet snow is forecast to mix with rain on Saturday and Sunday in Labrador. Given the time of year and the warm component of this system, I expect amounts will be highly variable.

Gusty southerly wind gusts of 30-60 km/h are forecast on average for Saturday in the Maritimes, Saturday and into Sunday for N.L., except up to 100 km/h in parts of southwestern Newfoundland on Saturday.

There will be clearing behind this cold front, which will take place from northwest to southeast in the Maritimes Saturday night into Sunday morning, meaning plenty of sunshine is forecast for Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick on Sunday.

Clearing will be slightly slower for Newfoundland and Labrador, but I expect periods of rain and drizzle to end Sunday morning in Newfoundland with gradual clearing from west to east.

While often not welcome on the weekend, the rain is much-needed as precipitation for May has been well below the season average for much of the region.
