Province names new seniors’ advocate

The Newfoundland and Labrador provincial government has named a civil servant and longtime social worker as the province’s newest seniors’ advocate.

In a May 16 release, the province said Susan Walsh will take over the position, which has been vacant since Suzanne Brake retired in June 2021.

In her new role, Walsh will be responsible for identifying, reviewing and analyzing systemic issues related to seniors and make recommendations for changes.

Walsh, who began her career as social worker in mental health services at the Waterford Hospital in 1991, served as the deputy minister of the children, seniors and social development in her most recent role.

“I congratulate Susan Walsh on this nomination for the role of seniors’ advocate,” said John Abbott, minister of children, seniors and social development. “Ms. Walsh is well suited for this role, and I am confident she will serve the people of the province well.”

Walsh holds a master of social work degree from the University of Toronto, specializing in policy and administration, as well as a bachelor of social work degree from Memorial University.

Her career progressed through many positions, varying from frontline management and policy analysis to senior management and executive positions, among others.

She also held various leadership roles within the former department of social services, the Eastern Regional Health Authority and the department of health and community services, among other positions.
