Province reports 31st COVID-19 death

The province reported its 31st COVID-19 death on Monday, Jan. 24.

The latest fatality from the coronavirus is a man in his 60s in the Western Health region, the Department of Health stated in a news release.

The province will remain in modified Alert Level 4 for at least one more week, as there were 349 new COVID-19 cases reported Monday, Jan. 24.

The majority of new cases, 274, are in the Eastern Health region, while 42 are in the Central Health region, 25 are in the Western Health region and eight are in the Labrador-grenfell Health region.

Public Health officials are set to reassess the province’s alert level again on Jan. 31.

The number of people in hospital with COVID-19 has risen to 21. Five of those hospitalized are in critical care, the department said.

Public Health also reported 335 new recoveries — 252 in the Eastern Health region, 24 in the Central Health region, 48 in the Western Health region and 11 in the Labrador-grenfell region — leaving 2,669 active cases in the province.

There are 1,844 cases in the Eastern Health region, 385 in the Central Health region, 127 in the Labrador-grenfell Health region and 313 in the Western Health region.
