C-NLOPB lays charges against Husky in connection to 2018 White Rose oil spill

ST. JOHN’S — The Canadanewfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) has laid charges against Husky Oil Operations Ltd. in connection to the November 2018 oil spill in the White Rose Field.

In an Oct. 19 release, the C-NLOPB said three charges have been laid against Husky. Two of the three charges relate to contraventions of regulations governing offshore drilling and production in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The charges allege Husky failed to stop work which was likely to cause pollution and resumed work without ensuring it could do so without causing pollution.

The third charge relates to a violation of the Canada-newfoundland and Labrador Atlantic Accord Implementation Act, which says no person shall cause or permit a spill on or from any portion of the provincial offshore area.

The first court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 23 St. John’s provincial court.

The C-NLOPB noted it would not comment further as the matter is before the court.
