Brigus South woman wins $1 million

ST. JOHN’S — Josephine Hawkins of Brigus South, scratched her way to $1 million recently.

In an Oct. 15 release, Atlantic Lottery Canada announced that Hawkins had won the $1 million prize from a Big 10 Scratch’n Win game.

Hawkins said she told her husband about the win as the couple was about to go to sleep.

“He went to sleep and the next day he said, ‘Did I have a dream you won $1 million?”

Hawkins has been retired for 10 years and has two children and three grandchildren. She said she is excited to celebrate with them.

“It feels great to know you won’t have any more financial concerns and that your children and grandchildren will be taken care of,” she said.

Hawkins plans to purchase a new vehicle for herself and to make some upgrades to the family home. She also wants to buy a new all-terrain motorized wheelchair for her husband to give him more freedom and independence.

Hawkins is also looking forward to when the COVID‐19 pandemic eases, and travel becomes safe again. She hopes to travel to Vancouver soon to visit family, have a girls’ trip to Las Vegas and a vacation to Miami.

The winning ticket was bought at O’brien’s Clover Farm in Cape Broyle,. The business will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
