RCMP warn of scam calls after report

TWILLINGATE — The RCMP are warning the public after a phishing scam was reported on Oct. 14.

In an Oct. 15 release. Twillingate RCMP said they received a report from an elderly resident that scammers called them claiming to be an Eastlink employee.

Police say the scammer told the victim they were eligible for a special COVID-19 rebate on their services once they provided their SIN, driver’s licence, name and date of birth.

Police later confirmed this was not an actual employee and there was no such rebate.

RCMP said that no matter how convincing a caller seems to be if they are requesting your personal information verify the organization by hanging up the call and calling the organization yourself.

Residents are reminded that a legitimate organization will never threaten you or ask you for sensitive information like your SIN over the phone.

Anyone who thinks they may have been the victim of a scam is asked to contact the nearest RCMP detachment or contact the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre at 888-495-8501 or at www. antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.htm.
