St. John’s East MP Jack Harris opts out of next election

St. John’s East NDP MP Jack Harris says he will not run in the next federal election.

In a statement Friday, Harris said he had a wonderful opportunity to sit in four federal Parliaments since 1987 and five general assemblies of the House of Assembly, for a total of more than 25 years.

“I am very grateful to the people of St. John’s East for giving me the privilege to serve them,” he said.

“It has been a pleasure to work with them and with all the communities in my riding.”

Harris touted NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh as a strong and passionate leader “fighting for a better Canada,” and applauded his “constant focus on ensuring Canadians have the help they need to get through this pandemic.”

He wished Singh and his NDP caucus the best.

“I will continue to serve my constituents here in St. John’s East and in Parliament until the next election, and when the time comes, I look forward to campaigning with our leader, Jagmeet Singh, to help elect the next NDP member of Parliament for St. John’s East,” he said.

Harris acknowledged his gratitude to his wife and children, who have supported him over the years.
