Scotians drop two of three

TRENTON – It was a rough weekend for the Pictou County Jr. B Scotians in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League play.

The Scotians ran into a hot Membertou Jr. Miners club and dropped games in Eskasoni and at home in Trenton. They fell 5-2 on the road on Saturday, Nov. 26, and then 7-3 in Trenton on Sunday, Nov. 27.

Ryan Frizzle scored both Pictou County goals on Saturday and Brandon Connors made 40 saves in the Scotians’ goal. The fifth Miners’ goal was an empty-netter.

In Trenton, the Scotians and the Miners had two goals apiece at the end of the first period. Luke Young and Matt Carson scored for Pictou County.

The home team then went up 3-2 on a goal by Joseph Mason but then the Miners scored five unanswered goals to put the game away.

Connors made 38 saves for the Scotians.

The weekend started on a high note with a 6-2 win in Springhill over the Cumberland County Blues.

Zach Houston led the Pictou County offence with a power play goal and a short-handed goal plus a pair of assists. Carter Hood, Frizzle, Young, and Mason rounded out the Scotians’ scoring.

Jack Cameron made 20 saves for the win.

The Scotians’ record now stands at 8-5-0-0 for 16 points which ties them with the Antigonish Bulldogs for second place in the Sid Rowe Division.

The Pictou County squad next sees action on Friday when they travel to Port Hawkesbury to face the Strait Pirates. The Scotians are back on home ice in Trenton on Sunday at 6 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
