AT THE LIBRARY: The magic of the season

From books to movies, magazines, recipes and crafts the library has you covered this holiday season – whatever the reason for celebrating this holiday season. Drop by and browse the library shelves at your local library, and search the library collection online too. We’re happy to help, just let us know what you are looking for and we’ll see what we can do to assist.

There are lots of fun, drop-in holiday programs all month long to celebrate the festive season, and following is a small sampling of a few. Please call, drop by your local library – and visit our PARLevents calendar online at www.parl.ns.ca for full details.

With many thanks to our Dutch community, Sinterklaas will be visiting the Antigonish Library on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The New Glasgow Library is holding a Holiday Party at on Saturday, Dec. 10 beginning at 10:30 a.m., and a Children’s Movie Matinee on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. The Stellarton library is hosting a drop-in Holiday Fun program from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13 and Thursday, Dec. 15, and Make an Ornament (for teens, ages 12+) on Tuesday, Dec. 20 and Thursday, Dec. 22 from 4-7 p.m. (for any last minute gifting!).

Santa will be visiting the Pictou Library on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 10:30 a.m., and there will also be two Christmas puppet shows at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8 and Tuesday, Dec. 13. The Westville library is hosting dropin family fun event for all ages, “All things Christmas” on Tuesday, Dec. 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The River John Library is hosting a Welcome Newcomers Meet & Greet on Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 6-8 p.m., and Cookie Decorating daily from Dec. 20 to 23. The Trenton Library has Snowflake scavenger hunts all month long, and a Crafternoon to make beautiful stars (perfect for holiday tree toppers or window decorations) on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 4:30 p.m.

Oh, and if anyone needs help with writing a letter to Santa, we have paper and a special mailbox for Canada Post at our libraries until Friday, Dec. 9!

And the fun continues, with the Adopt-a-Library Literacy Program’s big Holiday Book Give Away from Dec. 16-24.

Drop by the library and pick up a free children's book (or two) courtesy of Adopt-aLibrary for under your Holiday tree - and let's celebrate the Holiday season by reading together!

Looking for something for the book (or movie) lover on your list? The library’s annual Gift a Book Fundraiser is underway until Dec. 31. You can read/watch the new book/movie first, receive a nice little thank you card, and an income tax receipt. And you help make a difference in your local community too! It’s the perfect gift that keeps on giving.

Please note, the library will be closing for Christmas and New Year’s holidays. During this time, virtual services will be available at the library’s website, and book returns remain open. The Regional Library will close early on Sat. Dec. 24 at 12 p.m., and remain closed Dec. 25 to 27. The library will reopen on Wednesday Dec. 28. The Library will close early at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, and will remain closed Jan. 1-2. The Regional Library will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
