Good news New Glasgow. Santa Claus is coming to town.

New Glasgow Fire and Rescue Station 33 will be bringing some holiday cheer back to town on Dec. 10.

New Glasgow firefighter and parade co-chair Art MacLean said he is happy to be involved with bringing the parade back after a three-year absence caused by COVID and other issues.

They hope to make up for lost time.

“Our goal is to make this the best Christmas Parade ever,” MacLean said.

He said safety is their No. 1 priority and they encourage everyone to be cautious, particularly since safety risks can increase with a nighttime event like this.

New Glasgow Police, youth troopers, crossing guards and New Glasgow fire department members will be policing the parade route to make sure spectators stay safely back from the roadways and they encourage people to not sit on the curb or near the road.

“We also ask all spectators to keep back a safe distance from the roadways and to keep a watchful eye on children during the parade,” MacLean said.

The parade is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

The route begins on Granville Street and then moves to East River Road, continuing onto Archimedes Street and then Provost Street.

Parade participants are encouraged to stay on the floats until they get back to Granville Street to reduce the risk of any accidents.

Organizers are planning a sensory-sensitive area in the parade for Autism N.S. spectators from Viola’s Way to Jury Street.

In this section, there will be no strobe or quick flashing lights allowed and music will be turned down. Sirens and loud horns will also not be permitted.

Donations for the Pictou County Food Bank will be collected during the event by volunteers with the food bank and Sobeys.

Sobeys has also offered to match any monetary donations collected during the parade.

MacLean said they’re getting calls daily from people and businesses interested in taking part in the parade and they are hoping more will join.

Parade entry forms can be found at Town Hall or online at: https://www. newglasgow.ca/entry-formnewhtml.
