CONTRIBUTED

Soon, July 1 will be here and many local residents will be heading to Westville for the street parade and then back home for a family or neighbourhood barbecue.

Many others will be back in town at 3 p.m. to observe the rededication of the town’s cenotaph, which was unveiled 100 years previously on July 1, 1922.

Nova Scotia’s Lt. Gov. Arthur J. LeBlanc will be in attendance to unveil a plaque in regards to the anniversary along with Premier Tim Houston, local dignitaries, members of the Royal Canadian Legion Colour Party, Nova Scotia Highlanders. Others dressed in military uniforms of the past, courtesy of the Pictou County Military Museum, will also be present.

A moment of silence followed by the Last Post, Lament and Rouse will be part of the service. While the names of those from the town who gave their lives in war are read out, descendants and interested citizens will be able to lay a white carnation as a sign of remembrance.

If you would like to be a part of this service and lay a carnation contact Michael Thompson, director of recreation at 902-396-1059.
