MacLeod Mountain Mudding ripped, roared and rumbled as it kicked off its grand opening last weekend.

Located in Barney’s River, the opening of the motorsport mud park was a weekend-long event. There were hill climbs, mud rally competitions and bounty hole competitions.

They also hosted burn-outs, which was a highlight of Friday’s opening night.

The burnout pad, where the burnouts took place, is dedicated to Brandon MacLeod of Stellarton, who passed away unexpectedly in September of 2020.

Stephanie Swain and Paul MacLeod are the owners of the park and said Brandon was friends with their children.

“We are trying to raise awareness of suicide, mental health and drug addiction,” says Swain, adding there is too much of it in the area.

The first burnout of the night was done by Brandon’s mom Sandra MacLeod in one of Brandon’s cars. He had a love of cars and racing.

With the car tethered to a dump truck, family, friends and other spectators cheered as the tires squealed and smoke poured from the car.

Sandra says Van Veld Brothers Contracting Ltd made the form for the pad, Casey Concrete Ltd donated $8,000 worth of concrete and G&C Concrete Finishing smoothed it out.

Brandon did work with all of those people and businesses.

“Brandon knew so many people and so many different types of people. He just got along with everybody,” said Sandra.

The park aims to be family friendly and Friday night before the burnouts they hosted a kid’s fishing derby.

They also sold 50/50 tickets and with all proceeds being given to Steve and Jolene MacLeod, whose son has recently started cancer treatments.

Swain and Paul have around 50 team members, who are all volunteers, to help them keep the park running smoothly for the rest of the summer’s events.

The idea for the park came when Swain and her husband recently moved back to Pictou County.

Looking to give people another thing to do in the county, they turned to the property Paul grew up on.

"We thought we have all this land and the views here are amazing. Why not share it and make a little money too,” said Swain in a pervious interview.
