April showers bring May flowers and gardening books ...

TRECIA SCHELL Trecia Schell is community services librarian and branch librarian — Books-by-Mail, River John, Stellarton & Trenton Public Libraries.

... Much to the delight of all our green thumb gardeners.

The library has lots of informative, helpful gardening guides and growing tools — from resourceful magazines and books, to downloadable eBooks and eMagazines too. All you need is your free library card (which can be easily arranged by calling or emailing your local library location, or completing the online form, at the library’s website, www.parl.ns.ca).

Requests for library materials can also be placed online, and by emailing or calling your local library — and we’re happy to do the research for you.

Curbside pickup of library materials is also available, upon request. And if you live in our rural communities, Borrow-by-Mail is available (for free, with return postage included). For more information about BBM, please contact regional library headquarters at 902-755-6031, or toll-free at 1-866-779-7761, or bbm@parl.ns.ca.

Although our library doors are temporarily closed for in-person library visits, we’ll do our best to provide access to our library services, creatively through contactless measures.

Library programs will continue online, with several weekly online programs from Knitting Club to ABC’s Story Times. For full details, at any time, please visit our PARLevents calendar online at www.parl.ns.ca, or call/email your local library during regular open hours. We’re happy to help!

Getting Crafty @Library is blossoming this month, making beautiful Kirigami on Wednesday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m. To pick up the home-crafting kit, please contact your local library for arrangements. This month, to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, we are also offering Origami Peace Crane Take & Make home crafting kits.

Also coming up in May, we have two popular local authors, sharing reading from their “just-published, hot off the press” books! Monica Graham joins us on Tuesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. with Senior Moments, and Genevieve Graham joins us on Tuesday, May 18, at 7 p.m. with Letters Across the Sea.

Both author readings are virtual, online events (via Zoom, or teleconference by phone). Full program details are available in our PARLevents calendar online

The library offers many online services — from courses, to downloadable eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and access to several online research databases — all available through our website, at www. parl.ns.ca.

Curbside pickup for hold requests of library items is available upon request. And all library materials are quarantined and sanitized following NS Public Health guidelines. Free public Wi-Fi is also available outdoors, around each of our library locations.

Please note, the library will be closed on Monday, May 24, for the Victoria Day holiday. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. During this time, virtual library services are available online through our website, at www.parl. ns.ca and the Book Return drop boxes are open.

For more information on all our upcoming library programs and services, please call or drop by your local library, follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook or visit us online at www.parl.ns.ca.
