River Clyde Pageant back for eighth year

NEW GLASGOW, P.E.I. – The River Clyde Pageant will be returning for its eighth year with six performance days running between July 27 and Aug. 6.

The community-engaged outdoor theatre will be hosting a series of workshops in preparation for the pageant, kicking off a two-year performance cycle that will explore themes of disruption and transformation.

As a co-authored event, professional artists of various mediums from across Canada and the U.S. will be hosting workshops with community members beginning in June to create material to be featured in the mid-summer showcase.

Ian McFarlane will return to lead the puppet ensemble workshop, offering a deep dive into small-scall puppetry, ensemble performance techniques, mask work and object theatre.

Puppet designer Laura Stinson will also join the pageant and will offer drop-in puppet building, paper-mâché and flag-making every Saturday from June 10 until July 15.

Dance choreographer Reequal Smith will take a new team of dancers through Dance with the Wind which will explore creative movement and the outdoor environment. Six sessions will be held between June 18 and July 6.

Laura Astwood will train performers in stilt-walking, choreography and character development, while new pageant music director Garry Williams will offer his new workshop titled Branching Out.

In addition, choir director Andrea Ellis will guide singers of all ages in ensemble singing techniques and outdoor choral choreography.
