Disaster

South did well to scramble seven tricks against less than stellar defense but down three (-800) fetched a matchpoint zero.

North had forgotten that partner's 2NT advance was Lebensohl, a relay to three clubs, essentially promising a weak hand. A direct advance to the three level would reveal 8+ HCP.

How would the auction unfold when North dutifully bids three clubs? We can surmise that East will try three spades rather than make a speculative penalty double or perhaps aggressively advance to the major suit game.

It is true that three clubs would suffer a multi-trick defeat but how could East know that partner owned four clubs?

West will an easy time bringing home eleven tricks in spades when North begins with a diamond. With the club king onside, he will manage two club ruffs in dummy and eventually play a heart towards the king for an eleventh winner.

South was in a tough spot when partner issued a takeout double of the weak two-bid since he owned a virtual Yarborough with a pancake pattern. A pass could not be considered because West would record several overtricks for a matchpoint top.
