ANDREWS (nee French), Janet Elizabeth

Janet Elizabeth Andrews (nee French) died peacefully on January 23, 2023, age 80. Janet was the dearly loved mother of Kathryn Andrews (Peter Gutelius) and Jeremy Andrews (Lisa Carroll), daughter of Marion Porter (nee Wilson, deceased) and Roy French (deceased). Predeceased by her husband, John Andrews (2002). Devoted Nan to her grandchildren, Madelaine Gutelius, Sarah Gutelius and Liam Andrews. Janet is sadly missed by her sister, Marilyn Caldwell and by her nephews and niece, Jake Caldwell, Derek Caldwell (Rachel Brown) and Susie Caldwell (Kurt Rinehart) and by her Caldwell and Rinehart great-nieces and nephews. Janet was born in Halifax. She grew up in a loving extended family of Wilson aunts, uncles and cousins in Halifax and Fall River. Janet attended Dalhousie University and married John Andrews in Halifax. The family lived in Vancouver, Halifax, and England before returning to Canada and settling in North Toronto. Janet was a teacher and teacher librarian for many years. After Janet retired from teaching, she became a world traveller, visiting many countries on all seven continents. She took each grandchild on an amazing trip when they were twelve years old. Janet was a fiercely independent woman who never lost her Maritimer’s warm heart, wry sense of humour and love for her family. Janet was creative, an excellent knitter, and a wonderful cook. No one left her home without leftovers in Tupperware. Although she loved to travel, Janet’s favourite place in the world was Bayberry cottage in Stanhope, PEI. She took up golf later in life and greatly enjoyed her nine hole games and tournaments with the ladies at the Stanhope Golf Club (“You have to be tough to play in the ‘Puff”). When we think of our Mum, we picture her on the deck at the cottage, urging everyone to come walk down the lawn to watch the sunset over Covehead Bay. The family thanks the Dunfield staff, the team from Home Instead, HCCSS and the wonderful medical team at Sunnybrook Hospital for all their care and compassion. We will have a celebration of Janet/Mum/Nan’s life in the spring in Toronto.
