P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Tankard taking place in Crapaud

CRAPAUD, P.E.I. — The Suzanne Birt and Tyler Smith rinks won their respective A sections of the provincial women’s and men’s curling championships in the evening draw on Jan. 26.

Birt and her Cornwall Curling Club rink registered a four-end 8-0 decision Summerside’s Melissa Morrow 8-0 in the P.E.I. Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Smith and his rink from the host Crapaud Community Curling Club scored a deuce with last-rock advantage in the 10th end to outscore Cornwall’s Adam Casey 9-8 in P.E.I. Tankard action.

Smith improved to 3-0 (won-lost) while Birt improved to 2-0. Both provincial championships feature a triple-knockout format.

Play continues in Crapaud on Jan. 27 with draws at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m.

The P.E.I. Tankard features 11 men’s teams and there are four women’s rinks competing for the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts title. Both events feature a triple-knockout format.

The P.E.I. champions will represent the province at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kamloops, B.C., Feb. 17-26, and the Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ont., March 3-12.
