Field fees to remain same in Cornwall

CORNWALL, P.E.I. — Cornwall town council will keep a field fee structure for Cornwall minor sports groups in place for another year, council decided at its Jan. 25 meeting.

The field fees were first approved in 2021 and the same structure will remain.

The town calculates field fees for local teams using a per-player fee combined with rebates for the average usage over previous three years.

Fees for the four main sports groups would have totalled around $46,000 in 2022, but under the fee structure, the town rebated $28,000, bringing the cost to the groups down to $18,000.

Council passed the resolution to keep the same fee structure in place, with an amended cancellation policy. If there is a no-show or if a team cancels within 48 hours of their booking, it would be charged for the booking. This would not apply to weather cancellations.

“For council to support my motion and hold fees at par at a time of record inflation is a testament to the sporting community of Cornwall,” said Coun. Cory Stevenson in an email to SaltWire on Jan. 26. “I support a freeze for one year as I hope we continually find ways to keep fees as low as possible for youth and their families and continually grow our sports community.”

The annual cost to operate the fields is approximately $157,000, which includes electricity, maintenance and staffing.
