BRIDGE

West cashed two clubs to continue with the jack, ruffed with dummy's nine of hearts. Declarer led a heart to the king, cashed the ace of diamonds discarding a spade from the table, and continued with the queen of diamonds ruffing away the king. The ace of hearts drew trump and declarer could claim eleven tricks, N-S +450.

East had offered a third seat pre-empt, despite holding an opening bid, in an effort to elevate the auction since partner was a passed hand.

North was forced to employ a Michaels cuebid to disclose at least 5-5 in the majors. This action offered partner a choice although it could backfire when partner owned a doubleton in both majors. A four heart overcall would be a unilateral decision although there would be no harm, no foul on this occasion.

If West opens at the onelevel, North will eschew Michaels to overcall one heart with the intention of bidding spades twice to show the 6-5 distribution. South will advance in diamonds and eventually raise to the heart game, allowing N-S to again reach their par.

West should be restricted to seven tricks in a club contract with competent defense.
