Cheers & Jeers

JEERS to P.E.I.’S Progressive Conservative government for the confusion surrounding any changes to fuel taxes because of a federally-imposed carbon pricing plan. Last week, Environment Minister Steven Myers told reporters the province won’t be maintaining provincial gas tax cuts. The premier’s office later confirmed the tax cut would stay in place. At a time when P.E.I. residents are facing rising costs for almost everything, it would be nice for the government to provide the public with consistent, clear information about this issue.

CHEERS to the Confederation Centre of the Arts for taking a risk and, despite the public flak executives knew they would face, announcing that Anne of Green Gables - The Musical will take a break every other summer, beginning this year. It must have been difficult shelving an Island summer tradition for which so many people have an emotional attachment. The backlash was instantaneous, as the centre must surely have known would be the case. However, giving Anne every other year off gives the giant stage production a better chance of full houses the year it is mounted (necessary to break even) and provides theatre-goers opportunities to see more Canadian-produced content in the non-anne years. This year, it's Maggie by Scottishcanadian entertainer Johnny Reid. Let's give this trial a chance.

CHEERS to Canoe Cove farmer Chrys Jenkins and his neighbours for the months of work they put in for their annual Living Nativity and Light Show that takes place Dec. 2-4. More than 40 people volunteer their time during weeks of preparation to make the event a success. Not only does this event bring a little holiday spirit to those who come for the drive-thru event, it also serves as a fundraiser. This year, donations will help Anderson House, the provincial emergency shelter for women, trans and non-binary individuals and their children. There is no shortage of events put on in December or people who volunteer their time. All deserve a big thank you for bringing good cheer to Islanders.

CHEERS to Immanuel Christian School and École-sur-mer Requins, two of the smaller schools in P.E.I., for making their mark in recent P.E.I. School Athletic Association championships. The Immanuel Christian School (ICS) Eagles set school sports history by capturing the PEISAA Senior A Girls Volleyball League gold-medal match – marking the first-ever PEISAA championship for the school. The École-sur-mer Requins won a second straight P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) Senior A Boys Volleyball League championship. Neither school has a high enrolment, and to be able to compete for – and win – a provincial championship speaks volumes about the dedication of student athletes and their coaches.
