UPEI teams enter break with identical records

HALIFAX – The UPEI men’s and women’s basketball teams are entering the Christmas break with identical records of 6-3 (won-lost) after splitting games on the weekend.

The women Panthers defeated the first-place Saint Mary’s Huskies 79-74 on Nov. 25 and lost to the last-place Dalhousie Tigers 61-57 on Nov. 26.

In men’s action, the Panthers recorded a 95-87 win over the Huskies on Nov. 25 and dropped an 80-73 decision to Dalhousie on Nov. 26.

The UPEI teams resume Atlantic University Sport (AUS) play at home against Acadia on Jan. 7. The women’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the men tipping off at 6 p.m.

WOMEN

TIGERS 61 PANTHERS 57

The Panthers led 28-18 at halftime, but the Tigers answered back to outscore the Panthers 19-12 and 24-17 in the third and fourth quarters to earn their first win of the season.

Andrea Hebert (12), Katie Wuotila (10) and Gracie Dalton (10) were the top scorers for the Tigers (1-7).

Alicia Bowering (14), Lauren Rainford (13), Devon Lawlor (12) and Aiden Rainford

(10) paced UPEI offensively.

PANTHERS 79 HUSKIES 74

The Panthers again started strong and built a 44-29 lead at the half.

Lauren Rainford led the Panthers with 25 points while Lawlor added 16 and Bowering sank 12.

Alaina Mcmillan (16), Sophia Widmeyer (13) and Lucina Beaumont (13) paced the offence for the Huskies (7-2).

MEN

TIGERS 80 PANTHERS 73

Samuel Wade (17), Nginyu Ngala (16) and Malcolm Christie (10) were the leading scorers for Dalhousie (5-3), which took a 36-33 lead into the half.

Elijah Miller scored a game-high 27 points for the Panthers. Sam Chisholm (13) and Kamari Scott (12) were UPEI’S other top scorers.

PANTHERS 95 HUSKIES 87

Miller (22), Scott (19) and Isaiah Ankra (19) were the Panthers’ top scorers.

Shae Linton-brown scored a game-high 32 points for the Huskies. Jayrell Diggs added 19 and Dontae Mitchell had 18 points.

The Panthers led 52-39 at halftime.
