Five-goal first period paces Foreurs past Isles

Five first-period goals sparked the Val-d’or Foreurs to a 6-3 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders in a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) game on Nov. 25.

Nathan Drapeau (2-1), William Provost (2), Alexandre Guy and Alexandre Doucet scored for the Foreurs, who are 13-11-2-0 (won-lostovertime losses-shootout losses). Zachael Turgeon (3) and Matis Ouellet (2) had multiple-assist efforts before 2,487 fans at Eastlink Centre.

Lucas Romeo (1-2), Jérémie Biakabutuka (1-1) and Giovanni Morneau countered for the Islanders (10-12-20), who scored the only two goals of the middle frame to go into the second intermission down 5-2.

Winning goaltender Adam Rouleau stopped 33 of 36. Charlottetown starter Jack Flanagan gave up five goals on seven shots in 17:25 of action, and Franky Lapenna came on in relief and stopped 16 of 17 shots the rest of the way.

The game’s three stars were: 1. William Provost (Foreurs); 2. Lucas Romeo (Islanders); 3. Nathan Drapeau (Foreurs).

The Islanders were back in action on Nov. 27 in Sydney, N.S., against the Cape Breton Eagles (8-12-2-0). Charlottetown’s next home game is against the Victoriaville Tigres (16-6-1-2) on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

The Eagles pay a return visit on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m.
