Holland College soccer teams go 1-1-2 in weekend play

FREDERICTON – The Holland Hurricanes’ soccer teams recorded a win, a tie and two losses in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) weekend action.

The women Hurricanes and UNBSJ Seawolves played to a scoreless draw on Oct. 1, and the St. Thomas Tommies edged Holland College 1-0 on Oct. 2. After weekend play, the women's team has a record of 2-2-2.

In men’s action, the Hurricanes split a pair of games – defeating UNBSJ 4-2 on Oct. 1 and losing a 1-0 decision to St. Thomas on Oct. 2. The men's record is now 4-1-1.

Both Holland College teams are back in action at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall against the University of King’s College on Oct. 15. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m., with the men’s contest kicking off at 3:15 p.m.

Following is a recap of the Hurricanes’ weekend games:

WOMEN TOMMIES 1 HURRICANES 0

Carolyne Roy’s goal in the 80th minute proved to be all the offence the Tommies would require.

Marissa Archibald recorded the shutout. Brianna Spencer handled the keeper duties for the Hurricanes.

St. Thomas is 4-3-0.

HURRICANES 0 SEAWOLVES 0

Spencer and UNBSJ’S Jillian Smith recorded the clean sheets.

The Seawolves’ record is 5-1-1.

MEN TOMMIES 1 HURRICANES 0

Evan Rees scored the game’s lone goal in the 38th minute.

Luke Ewen earned the shutout for the Tommies (60-1). Keegan Mackinnon was in goal for the Hurricanes.

HURRICANES 4 SEAWOLVES 2

Mohammad Alhaj Ali scored three times to lead the Hurricanes. Kazuya Iwasaki netted the other Hurricanes’ marker.

Ashton Engel and Stefan Johnson answered for UNBSJ (3-4-0).

The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

Mackinnon was the winning keeper.
