Hurricanes pick up four baseball victories

HALIFAX – The Holland Hurricanes swept a pair of Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) doubleheaders on the road over the weekend.

On Oct. 1, the Hurricanes defeated the Acadia Axemen 10-0 in five innings and 4-3. On Oct. 2, the Hurricanes posted 4-3 and 10-3 victories over the Dalhousie Tigers.

The Hurricanes, who now sit at 8-3 (won-lost), visit the St. Francis X-men (5-7) on Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.

Matthew Peacock (2-2, run scored, two RBI), Bret Cheverie (2-4, run scored, RBI) and Dylan Worth (1-3, run scored, two RBI) were the top batters for the Hurricanes.

John Flynn, who pitched five innings of scoreless, twohit ball, earned the pitching win. Flynn did not issue any walks and struck out six.

The Hurricanes rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to turn a 3-1 deficit into a one-run victory.

Owen Robison (1-2), Sam Worth (1-3, run scored, RBI), Cheverie (1-3), Ethan Smith (1-4, run scored) and Brayden Lebel (1-4) paced the Hurricanes’ offence.

Winning pitcher Matthew Peacock went the distance, allowing one earned run, three hits, six walks and recording six strikeouts.

Duncan Picketts (1-2, run scored, three RBI), Ethan

Smith (1-2, walk, two runs scored) and Robison (1-1, walk, run scored) delivered key offensive performances for the Hurricanes.

Smith worked six innings of one-run ball, giving up four hits, two walks and striking out eight, to register the pitching win.

HURRICANES 10 AXEMEN 0

The Hurricanes blew the game open with a six-run fourth inning to open an 8-0 advantage.

Peacock (2-3), Dylan Worth (1-3, three RBI), Lebel (1-2, two RBI) and Peter Keedwell (1-2, RBI) sparked the Hurricanes’ attack.

Winning pitcher Sam Walsh allowed three hits, one walk and fanned four over five innings.
